Performing a variety of tasks associated with responding to and dealing with fire and emergency situations, rendering basic medical care to sick and injured persons and participating in fire safety work, training, station and equipment maintenance.
FIRE FIGHTER: Grade 07
Job Purpose:
Performing a variety of tasks associated with responding to and dealing with fire and emergency situations, rendering basic medical care to sick and injured persons and participating in fire safety work, training, station and equipment maintenance.
Key Responsibility Areas:
•Attends to the tasks/activities associated with the fire and emergency services in the Municipality.
•Responds as a member of the crew to fires, rescues, hazardous material incidents and related emergency and non-emergency humanitarian incidents.
•Participates in public fire education, conducting public demonstrations and visiting communities to promote fire safety.
•Prepares for emergency incidents and protection duty by participating in training drills and other fitness related training.
•Completes pro forma forms, registers and reports pertaining to the reporting of defects and accidents.

Essential Requirements:
•Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) or equivalent.
•Firefighter I certificate.
•Firefighter II certificate.
•Hazmat Awareness certificate.
•Hazmat Operations certificate.
•Valid First Aid Level III.
•Valid motor vehicle driving license.
•1-year relevant operational experience.
Preferred Requirements:
•2 years relevant operational experience
Special Conditions:
Required to work shifts. Must be prepared to work at any fire station within the area of the authority having jurisdiction in accordance with departmental policies. Must be prepared to undergo occupational assessment(s). Must not have any previous criminal convictions. Medical Test NFPA 1582. Performs heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity in confined areas and at elevated temperatures while wearing personal protective clothing and equipment weighing 4 approximately 25 kilograms. Required to work in hazardous locations at considerable above grade elevations. Faces exposure to carcinogenic dusts such as asbestos, toxic substances e.g. hydrogen cyanide, acids, carbon monoxide or organic solvents or ionizing radiation through inhalation or skin contact. Required to perform rescue work in swiftly flowing water. Enter structures on fire wearing protective bunker gear and breathing apparatus and carrying a variety of tools and equipment. Faces exposure to infectious agents such as Hepatitis B and HIV. Makes rapid transitions from rest to near maximal exertion without warm-up periods. Exposed to grotesque sights and smells associated with major trauma and burnt victims.
Physical Requirements:
The incumbent shall maintain a level of physical fitness as determined by the department.
SENIOR FIRE FIGHTER: Grade 09
Job Purpose:
Performing a variety of tasks associated with responding to and dealing with fire and emergency situations, rendering basic medical care to sick and injured persons and participating in fire safety work, training, station and equipment maintenance.
Key Responsibility Areas:
•Attends to the tasks/activities associated with the fire and emergency services in the Municipality.
•Responds as a member of the crew to fires, rescues, hazardous material incidents and related emergency and non-emergency humanitarian incidents.
•Prepares for emergency incidents and protection duty by participating in training drills and other fitness related training, as directed by Supervisors.
•Participates in fire safety and pre-planning visits as directed by Supervisors.
•Participates in public fire education, conducting public demonstrations and visiting communities to promote fire safety.
•Completes pro forma forms, registers and reports pertaining to the reporting of defects and accidents.
•Attends to the safety and safe keeping of all departmental equipment, vehicles, furniture etc.

LEADING FIRE FIGHTER: Grade 10
Job Purpose:
To perform a variety of tasks associated to responding to and dealing with fires and emergency situations, rendering basic medical care to sick and injured persons and participating in fire safety work, training and stations.
Key Responsibility Areas:
•Attends to the tasks/ activities associated with the fire and emergency services in the Municipality.
•Performing all duties as reflected in the Fire-fighter Level 1/2 job description.
•Driving and operating a range of heavy and extra heavy specialist appliances to/ at emergency incidents as directed by supervisors.
•Operating mobile and fixed breathing air compressors as directed by the supervisors to maintain continuous supply of breathing quality air for breathing apparatus operations.
•May assume the role of Breathing Apparatus Control Officer at emergency incidents.
•Carrying out specialised operations.
•Performs basic level mechanical maintenance on fire service appliances and equipment to ensure operational readiness of such vehicle's equipment.
•Taking charge of small-scale emergency incidents.
•Conducting health and safety inspections and participating in Departmental Health and Safety Committee meetings, maintaining a safe work environment in the workplace.
•Supervises and commands fire-fighters operationally as directed by the supervisors.
•Participating in public fire education by delivering prepared lectures as directed by supervisors to promote safety within the communities.
•Assists in training of Fire-Fighters in emergency service skills as directed by the supervisor.
•Performing control room duties, ensuring an appropriate fire response.
•Assumes responsibility for the Station Commander in the absence of the incumbent of this post, maintaining operational efficiency.

•High Angle Rescue 1 certificate.
•Valid First Aid Level III.
•Valid motor vehicle driving license (Code C).
•5 years relevant operational experience of which 2 years must be at a Senior Firefighter level.
Preferred Requirements:
•Higher Certificate in Fire Technology or any other related and equivalent qualification.
Fire Service Instructor I certificate.
•6 years relevant operational experience of which 3 years must be at a Senior Firefighter level.
Special Conditions:
Required to work shifts. Must be prepared to work at any fire station within the area of the authority having jurisdiction in accordance with departmental policies. Must come through the fire services ranks having met all the requirements up to Senior Fire Fighter Level. Must be prepared to undergo occupational assessment(s).
