Job Description

Assists in planning and implementing the pursuit of strategic opportunities by cultivating partnerships or other Marine New Business SPM and BDM and Head relationships or by identifying new markets for the entity's products or services.

  • Build and maintain relationships with intermediaries, by learning on the job in all spheres of the new business process and develop technical skills and knowledge for future New Business Marine roles to ensure growth of the business and excellent service to intermediaries.

  • Willing to obtain the skills required and apply this to underwrite and retain business through negotiation on technical issues, quotations, rates and renewals within underwriting guidelines. – including complex accounts/special wording type accounts.

  • Develop an understanding of financial transactions within mandate. – discounts, rates, accepting business, declining to quote on business - including complex accounts/special wording type accounts.

  • Assist with reinsurance placement and all administration until placement within SOP’s. Assist with operational effectiveness by understanding the management required for handling multi claimants, collecting outstanding premiums, requesting risk surveys and managing survey risk recommendations, signing off closing documentation and reporting.

  • Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, mandates, and company retention limits Manage a portfolio of small to medium brokers with focus on retaining existing business, growing their support within agreed targets and ensure profitability, as well as balance organic growth after business is obtained.

  • Maintain required productivity statistics and broker visitation records

  • Business Orientated, Customer Service Driven, Client Relationship Management Experience Essential, Decisive with the ability to apply learnings within a short time and make decisions within authority levels when mandates are agreed.

  • Current entry level technical Marine Insurance experience or understanding is a must.

  • Attributes / Competencies

  • Must have the ability to provide excellent customer service and maintain this at a high level, able to build positive relationships and maintain them, self-managed with good time management attributes and focused on delivering within the turnaround times to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ownership and responsibility of underwriting decisions is a requirement, which involves accepting risks on behalf of the Marine line of business and Old Mutual Insure.

  • Matric and 120 credits preferred

  • RE 5 advantageous

  • Experience – 3+ years Marine Underwriting.
