Job Description

We're looking for a strong, hands-on leader to lead a team of payroll administrators in a highly regulated environment.

This role is critical to managing the team responsible for the successful allocation of retirement fund payroll contributions and data, and for resolving unallocated deposits and over- and underpayments.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Leading payroll compliance delivery in line with Section 13A requirements, ensuring contributions, payroll data, and statutory submissions are accurate, complete, and submitted on time.
  • Managing daily payroll operations to keep workflows running smoothly, improve turnaround times, and maintain service levels across the function.
  • Driving audit readiness and risk control by maintaining strong records, monitoring controls, and ensuring the team is always prepared for internal and external review.
  • Leading and developing the team through coaching, performance management, and capability building to deliver consistent, high-quality results.
  • Building strong stakeholder relationships with employers, service providers, internal teams, and regulators to resolve payroll-related issues quickly and maintain trust and compliance.
  • Continuous improvement mindset — proactively reviewing processes to identify opportunities for improvement.

Qualifications and experience

  • Matric / Grade 12
  • A relevant tertiary qualification would be an advantage
  • Experience in retirement fund administration would be beneficial
  • Experience in process improvement and operational efficiency
  • Proven people leadership experience
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building ability
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and lead with confidence
