JOB DESCRIPTION

The position will have full accountability for the risk engineering and high-level underwriting of all very large Commercial Property policies with exposures greater than R250m at every stage of the policy lifecycle i.e. from quote stage to amendments to renewal of these policies and will therefore require a certain level of discretion to be considered and applied. The incumbent will be expected to know these policies intimately and be able to discuss details directly with brokers, clients, giving advice where required and suggesting solutions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify hazards and risk exposures at the premises and to advise of risk improvement requirements
  • Review survey reports provided from internal and external stakeholders to assess the risk and to provide risk reduction requirements or alternative risk management measures for the risk.
  • Review surveys & QA of completed survey reports 
  • Assist Underwriters in risk selection and retention by providing loss control expertise
  • Evaluate fire plans, rational designs and other technical documents.
  • Technical support to underwriters and technical managers
  • Read and Interpret the survey report requirements and prepare RRR letters for brokers.
  • Discuss renewals with internal commercial underwriters, brokers and technical managers for these policies and have intimate understanding of these policies so that you can have an informed discussion with brokers, Technical Managers and Commercial Property Specialist where necessary
  • Perform underwriting reviews (new business, amendments, multi claimants and renewals)
  • Conducting desktop assessment according to retention class and exposure
  • Engage fire engineers, local fire authority and various stakeholders
  • Managing the incoming work pools on surveys and compliance
  • Sound understanding of the National Survey Policy
  • Execution of the end-to-end survey function
  • Dealing with queries from internal and external stakeholders
  • Follow up on risk reduction requirements and handle of compliance function.
  • Read and Interpret the survey report requirements and prepare RRR letters for brokers incl. handling RRR negotiations under the guidance of the relevant Technical Manager
  • Adhoc support to the underwriting team

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Matric
  • Engineering qualification at least on an NQF level 6
  • FPA Fire engineering Courses
  • Santam RIA Modules
  • Advanced knowledge of all relevant SANS and firefighting codes/standards.
  • Minimum 3 years risk surveying and/or engineering experience.
  • Computer literate (MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint – intermediate proficiency levels)

  • Working knowledge of the CRM systems
  • Communication and understanding of Basic & Advanced fire hazards, firefighting, risk identification etc.
  • Knowledge of the Commercial Insurance product
