Assistant Standby Generator Technician

About this role

Purpose

To assist the Standby Generator Technician in maintaining, inspecting, testing, and repairing standby generator systems, ensuring reliable operation of critical power infrastructure while complying with health, safety, and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

. Preventive Maintenance Support

  • Assist with scheduled preventive maintenance on standby generators and associated equipment.
  • Clean generators, radiators, alternators, control panels, and generator rooms.
  • Check and replenish engine oil, coolant, and other consumables under supervision.
  • Assist with replacing filters, belts, hoses, batteries, and other serviceable components.
  • Prepare tools, equipment, and spare parts for maintenance activities.

. Routine Inspections

  • Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly visual inspections of generators and associated systems.
  • Check for oil, coolant, fuel, and exhaust leaks.
  • Inspect battery terminals, battery electrolyte levels (where applicable), and battery chargers.
  • Record generator operating hours, fuel levels, and equipment condition.
  • Report abnormalities to the Standby Generator Technician.

. Operational Assistance

  • Assist with generator start-up and shutdown procedures.
  • Support routine generator exercising and load testing.
  • Observe generator performance during testing and report unusual noise, vibration, smoke, or alarms.
  • Assist in verifying Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) operation.

. Corrective Maintenance Support

  • Assist with fault-finding and repair activities.
  • Remove and install mechanical and electrical components under supervision.
  • Assist with cable termination, wiring, and component replacement where authorised.
  • Help restore equipment to service following repairs.

. Fuel System Support

  • Assist with diesel tank inspections and fuel level monitoring.
  • Check for water contamination and fuel leaks.
  • Assist with fuel deliveries and fuel transfer operations.
  • Maintain cleanliness of fuel storage areas.

. Housekeeping

  • Maintain clean and safe generator rooms.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are cleaned and stored correctly.
  • Dispose of waste materials in accordance with environmental procedures.
  • Keep maintenance areas free of hazards.

. Documentation

  • Assist in completing maintenance checklists and inspection reports.
  • Record equipment readings and operating hours.
  • Report defects identified during inspections.
  • Assist with updating maintenance records and asset information.

. Health, Safety and Compliance

  • Follow all HSE requirements, lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedures, and permit-to-work systems.
  • Wear the required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain safe working practices at all times.
  • Report unsafe conditions, incidents, and near misses immediately.

. Emergency Response

  • Support emergency generator call-outs and breakdown repairs.
  • Assist with restoring standby power during utility failures.
  • Participate in the standby roster as required

  • QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS / KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / EXPERIENCE

    The Applicant must meet the following requirements:
    • Grade 12 Minimum requirement
    • Trade Test- Mechanical will be beneficial but not required
    • Valid SA Drivers’ License- Valid Code 14/EB
    • 1-2 Years’ experience in Telecommunications on GSM Sites
    • Dangerous Goods Driving Permit
